"...all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs..." - Senior Dogs Project's newsletter

Based on the reading I have done, I now follow the following vaccination routine:
10 - 11 weeks C3 - distemper, hepatitis & parvovirus
14 - 16 weeks C3 - distemper, hepatitis & parvovirus
12 - 15 months C3 - distemper, hepatitis & parvovirus
Kennel Cough - 2 weeks prior to boarding only
(Kennel Cough is a bacterial infection and long lasting immunity is not developed by following a yearly vaccination schedule, therefore vaccinating prior to possible exposure is the best way to prevent this disease.)
A puppy's immune system is too under-developed at 6 - 8 weeks of age to cope with the added burden of early vaccinations. Many pups also have maternal anti-bodies from their mothers, which actually counteract the vaccines if given at this early age. I prefer to wait until pups are 10 weeks old for their first vaccinations. I give only core vaccines in puppy shots. If you must vaccinate for Kennel Cough, please leave at least 4 weeks between a C3 & Kennel Cough vaccines, or only vaccinate 2 weeks or so prior to boarding.
Two vaccinations at least 4 weeks apart should give 100% cover against a strong disease challenge. The vaccine will take around 5 - 7 days to reach a good level of cover. Healthy pups should be socialised from the day they are born. Prior to vaccination, pups may be socialised with other healthy dogs visiting your home. After vaccinations you can confidently take your pup into the big wide world.
** NEVER vaccinate a sick or immuno-compromised dog. Wait until 100% recovered.
** STOP vaccinating ancient animals. (For Salukis 10+ years would be in this category.)
Your vet will probably recommend 3 puppy shots and yearly vaccinations after the puppy shots are complete. PLEASE do some reading about the new trains of thought developing world-wide about over-vaccinating our companion animals. Here are some links to get you started:
